Hungary's capital is actually two cities in one. 'Buda' was the old Turkish capital (after they defeated the Hungarians in 1526) and 'Pest' the town across the Danube which expanded into each other in 1873. Since the end of Communism Budapest has wasted no time in creating some great restaurants, clubs and bars. Similarly, and maybe because it isn't far from Vienna, its prices are on the up. Budapest suffered heavily from bombardments during the Second World War and again from the Russians. Buda Castle Palace, St.Stephen's Basilica and the central Synagogue all suffered greatly. Thankfully much of what was flattened was re-built sympathetically, if not exactly and this is testament to the Hungarian sense of renewal and re-growth. Budapest has had its martyrs and the Hungarians hold their national heroes dear but it has survived everything that's been thrown at it and is a truly wonderful city. However don't bother trying to learn the language if you're going for the weekend it's largely unintelligible and even a passing knowledge of Finnish or Turkish won't help! If you do go, don't forget to experience the natural Hot Springs. They've been attracting the famous for years and as Budapest is no stranger to excess they've more than likely cured many a sore head!
